Final module of free online fungal microscopy course launched today
March 02 2018
Microfungi.net is a free online course in fungal microscopy organised in partnership between the Fungal Infection Trust and the University of Manchester. All that is required is a basic microscope.
Each module contains a wealth of practical information supplemented with sample images and quizzes. The course is accredited by the University of Manchester and the Moodle-based system generates a printable certificate for each module.
This course is particularly useful for medical professionals practising in developing countries, where the need for rapid diagnostic skills is greatest. The first 3 modules are also available in French, Spanish and Portuguese, and the course can be completed in the students’ own time, with no enforced deadlines for course elements.
Modules 1 and 2 cover basic microscope operation and maintenance, wet mounts, reagent preparation and staining techniques. Module 3 covers histological slide preparation. The latest module focuses on rare fungi, including neglected tropical fungal diseases, with topics including:
- Fungal taxonomy and classification
- Identifying and reporting features
- Superficial infections
- Cutaneous and subcutaneous infections
- Mucosal infections
- Respiratory infections
- Deep tissue infections
- Empirical management
“The Microscopy.net course will enable clinicians around the world to rapidly diagnose most fungal infections in minutes, saving lives” - Professor David Denning
